Competition and camaraderie: two hallmarks of Thornton Academy, Saco, Maine

This season, over 75 of our international students are participating in fall sports! Athletics gives international students the opportunity to make connections with local students, become a part of our greater community, and learn important soft skills like leadership and teamwork. Thornton Academy conducts its football workouts at both an on-campus practice facility and at Dr. Paul S. Hill, Jr. Stadium. The varsity team traditionally plays its games on Saturdays at 1:30pm; in recent years, one Friday night home game has been added to the yearly schedule. Varsity players who may be less experienced have an opportunity to participate in junior varsity games on Mondays. Thornton Academy also has a freshman team that competes against schools in southern Maine and northern New England.

Athletics are an integral part of the Thornton Academy experience. Our rich and storied history of athletic excellence is the result of more than 130 years of competition and camaraderie—and our athletic traditions run deep. Our athletic teams have won more than 50 state championships, but we value athletics as more than just a way to win trophies. 

Today we offer more than 50 teams at many different levels, and all students are encouraged to get fit and have fun by joining a team—whether they are new to a sport or a potential New England champion. Many of our coaches also serve as faculty, which allows them to teach and coach through a holistic lens. 

Tuition fee for 2022-2023 (2023 - 2024) US$ 49,400 per year, includes boarding (US$ 50,800)
