Hawaii Preparatory Academy Summer Session

Do you have a passion you want to pursue? Our specialized four-week, full-day Academies are designed for both day and boarding students, ages 11 to 17. Students come from Hawai‘i Island and around the world to expand their academic potential and discover learning adventures within our extraordinary ecosystems, landscapes, and culture.

We also offer weeklong Enrichment Camps for day students in June and July, as well as our Ka Makani Keiki Camp (grades K-5).

We are offering the following academies:

EVENING ACTIVITIES

Evening activities are designed to build relationships between students from around the world as well as encouraging individual social and emotional growth.

Activities may include pool parties, open gym, smores, crafts, BBQ at Hapuna Beach, team games, town vans, open mic, talent show, and flashlight tag.

WEEKEND EXCURSIONS

Weekend excursions provide an opportunity to explore the island, and enjoy the beauty, nature, and variety of experiences that Hawai‘i Island has to offer.

May include beach blast at Anaeho’omalu Bay, dinner and a movie, Pololu hike, Hāpuna Beach, Kalōpā hike, carnival, water slide, dance, and Fairwinds snorkle boat tour.

SPORTS (additional fees may apply)

Summer at HPA offers intramural sports, tennis, and horseback riding. All sports run daily, after classes, from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. Intramural sports build basic skills and encourage team play. Activities may include flag football, ultimate frisbee, basketball, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, hiking, kickball, and softball. 

Residential Life

  • Residence halls house students in double and sometimes triple rooms.
  • Each room has beds and built-in closets, shelves, desks, and access to the campus-wide computer network and the Internet.
  • Each building has a central lounge and laundry facilities.
  • Faculty members and residential assistants provide supervision.

Tuition covers instruction, room, board, books, after school intramural sports, most group activities, airport ground transportation, and excursions. Airfare, health insurance, optional sports, and personal expenses are extra and thus NOT included.

Enrichment Camps

Our summer enrichment camps offer a unique and comprehensive learning experience, allowing you to explore a variety of different interests and develop new skills. Whether you’re looking in to build your sports skills, a curious beginner scuba diver, or an origami enthusiast, we’ve got you covered.

Our summer camps are designed to provide a fun and engaging learning environment, where you can make new friends and develop your creativity, physical abilities, and critical thinking skills.

PADI Open Water SCUBA Certification

Upon successful completion of this two week, 8 day class, students will earn their PADI Open Water diver certification. The course will involve three main phases: knowledge development, confined water dives in HPA’s pool, and open water shore dives. Safe diving practices will be emphasized throughout the course. Prior to the beginning of the course, students will need to complete a swim test successfully, submit three forms (PADI Medical Statement, Safe Dive Practices Standard of Understanding, and Release of Liability), and be comfortable in the ocean. All students must provide their own snorkeling gear, which includes dive mask, snorkel, booties and open-heel dive fins. All scuba gear, dive computers, and wetsuits will be provided.

Limited to 6 students: Dates: June 3-13, Monday-Thursday; Times: 8:30 am to 3:00 pm
Ages: 12-17; Cost: US$ 800 excluding homestay

Skateboard Deck Design & Build

Skateboard Deck Design & Build: Build your own skateboard deck using maple veneer, wood glue, a mold, and a vacuum bag. Cut out your custom skateboard shape. Then design and apply your own graphic to your skateboard deck. This hands-on class will apply basic woodworking skills and graphic design.

Learn how to use our shop tools and come home with a personalized skateboard deck! (Skateboard deck only. Trucks and skateboard wheels not included.)

Ages 11 - 17. Supplies included in the program cost; Dates: July 22-26, Monday-Friday; Times: 9:00 am to noon
Cost: US$ 400 excluding homestay

Equestrian Camp

Beginners/Intermediate

The Beginners Equestrian Camp offers a diverse training regimen designed to create a working knowledge of the aids and mechanics involved when riding English, as well as proper grooming and tacking procedures. Instruction will enable students to gain equestrian knowledge, and for beginners to learn stable management and basic riding skills. Ages 8 and above. 8 students maximum. Three 3 hour lessons.

Dates: June 11-13, Tuesday-Thursday; Times: 9:00 am to noon
Cost: U$ 300, excluding homestay

Jumpers

The Jumpers Equestrian Camp offers a diverse training regimen designed to create a working knowledge of the aids and mechanics involved when jumping, as well as proper grooming and tacking procedures.

Instruction will encourage students to enhance and challenge their existing equestrian knowledge, and reinforce their stable management and basic riding skills. Ages 8 and above. 6 students maximum. Three 3 hour lessons.

Dates: June 18-20; Times: 9:00 am to noon, Tuesday-Thursday
Cost: US$ 300, excluding homestay
